The Artificial Intelligence assistant of Facebook, which the company has currently dubbed as ‘M’ is under development and testing. Specific users have been testing the AI assistant in the Silicon Valley. The AI assistant is slated to answer queries of the users and reply them from the available sources. The same functions have been incorporated in Apple’s Siri and Windows Cortana. Also, Google search has been improving by the addition of several search algorithms Google Knowledge Graph.
However, there is something more peculiar about ‘M’. It is the ability of the AI assistant to learn exponentially that makes it truly unique and probably better than Google, Siri and Cortana. What has been known about ‘M’ so far seems to support this notion. It is stated that ‘M’ unlike the other search engines or AI assistants do not simply mimic the humans. It learns their behavioural patterns and learns to improvise.
Now this might seem a farfetched idea but when one considers the fact that Facebook has over 1.49 billion users according to the renowned statistical site statista.com, makes it an imposing factor. The number of users of Facebook has increased exponentially from around 100 million in the 3rd quarter of 2008 till the 2nd quarter of 2015. It also means that the numbers will keep growing for the years to come and once ‘M’ is made accessible to all the users, its knowledge base will increase in a similar proportion.
Yes, user base of Google, Apple and Windows but when compared with Facebook, the growth is very limited. Also, if the claims that ‘M’ incorporates unique learning algorithms are true, it would become much better than the other three. With further advancements in technology and its knowledge base, ‘M’ will grow pretty fast in terms of its analytics and intelligence.
There is certainly no doubt that ‘M’ might defeat other AIs in the race to become better and faster and would probably turn out to be truly the best. But, this ‘Best’ scenario also begs another major question to be answered. If ‘M’ could grow the way it is expected, what will stop this Artificial Intelligence from dominating the internet or even humans as has been feared by Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Elon Musk.
Hawking, Gates and Musk have regularly warned about the probability of AI becoming better than human intelligence in the near future and this leads to a scenario where the AI might even rule over humans.
An AI that can learn millions of times faster than humans and from over 1.49 billion humans as in the case of ‘M’ could actually lead to a domination of AI over humans. However, whether it is our fear of the unknown or a real threat remains to be seen and only time will tell what lies ahead.
